Hauz Khas: Cafes and Resto-bars one should try

posted in: India, North India | 0

An ancient village, part of the second capital of Delhi, Hauz Khas Village is a lovely little place at the heart of India’s largest city. People visit Hauz Khas Village for a number of reasons- monuments, picnics, shopping, hanging out or partying. Whatever is the reason, food is always there on everyone’s mind. And Hauz Khas Village doesn’t disappoint many. From chic cafes to happening bars, Hauz Khas Village has something for everyone. Though in recent times, it has become a place for night clubs, it also has a number of interesting cafes, especially for peaceful mornings and charming evenings.

While living in the charming Hauz Khas Village for a decade now, I and Suvendu have loved exploring the cafes here as much as enjoying the vibes of the village itself. {To know more about the village, check out: Hauz Khas Village}. From south Indian comfort food to spicy north Indian dishes, from yummy Chinese food to classic European cuisine, the cafes in Hauz Khas have delighted us with their variety. Besides, for street-food lovers, it does have a few interesting eateries.

However, for a first timer, it may be a little confusing to choose their cafe/ restaurant for their taste. I think, I can help their cause. So, here’s my take on the best cafes, restaurants and resto-bars one should try in Hauz Khas Village.

Assessment of Hauz Khas Cafes/ Resto-Bars

Once upon a time, Hauz Khas Village had some great fine-dine restaurants and high-end cafes. But the character of the village has gone a sea change over the years. From a hang-out place for the rich and famous, it has become a go-to place for youngsters now. Accordingly, the eating options have changed. Though there are still a few fine-dine restaurants, small cafes now rule the roost in Hauz Khas Village. And of course, there are quite a few bars and nightclubs that shine late in the evening till midnight.

So, if you are looking for nightlife options, check out: Nightclubs and bars in Hauz Khas.

Now, let’s put these eating places into various buckets- cafes, restaurants and resto-bars. (For nightclubs and bars, check the link above). Since I live in Hauz Khas Village for nearly a decade now, I have a good assessment of the type and popularity of these cafes and resto-bars. And to do so, let me review these eating places from three aspects: ambiance, food, and service.

Working definitions for the types of culinary places:

Before I start the review, let me clarify the definitions of cafes, restaurants and bars, as I understand.

  • Cafes: Focus on beverages (tea/ coffee/ cool drinks) and light snacks. However, they may or may not have table service.
  • Restaurants: Offer a full range of dishes, often multi-cuisine with table service. Among the various types of restaurants, a sub category is called ‘Resto-Bar’ that offers alcoholic drinks too. {To understand the differences in detail, read: Types of restaurants}
  • Bars/ Pubs: They offer alcoholic drinks along with light snacks; food is often secondary. Actually, energetic vibes with music (and sometimes, dance floor) are more important. A related category is called ‘Pub’ (short for of ‘Public Houses’) that focuses on beer and community. I don’t think there’s any pub in Hauz Khas Village. But since people often use pubs and bars synonymously in India, I’m keeping pubs and bars together.
  • Night-Clubs: Primarily, they focus on alcoholic drinks and loud music with dance floors/ DJs.

For the purpose of this article, I combine cafes, restaurants and resto-bars together. As I said earlier, I’ll deal with bars/ pubs and night-clubs separately later.

Best Cafes, Restaurants/ Resto-Bars in Hauz Khas Village

If you are a foodie who likes a stylish ambiance away from the usual crowd and noise, Hauz Khas provides a variety of options. In a small place, there are more than 25 cafés and restaurants that you can choose from. Each restaurant has its own distinctive character and a burst of flavors to offer. You can enjoy live music daily in majority of the cafes and restaurants in Hauz Khas Village. The details may help you choose a café based on your cravings, taste, and mood. While checking the ratings, also consider the years of service and experience each place brings.

1. Hauz Khas Social

Without a doubt, this is the most popular resto-bar in Hauz Khas Village. It is one of the oldest restaurants that started in 2014. So much so that a lot of visitors come to the village just for Hauz Khas Social. Though its food is good, I don’t think that’s the reason people come here. Moreover, it’s the ambiance of HKS that appeals to a lot of people. Its unique style, curation and lake view are a big draw. Besides, from the rooftop, one can enjoy a lovely sunset over Hauz Khas Lake.

Established in 1992, this is the oldest restaurant still serving in the village. Founded by Mr. Shekhar Bengara, it’s the most authentic South Indian–Karnataka restaurant chain. The temple-like setup creates a wonderful and comfortable ambiance, complemented by pure vegetarian South Indian dishes. Over time, it gained popularity and has now expanded to around 14 restaurants across Delhi, NCR, Agra, and Sonipat.

The recently opened café has attracted young, Instagram-loving visitors with its appealing ambiance. Earlier, it was a small café. 8. Cafe FIKA

Among the most stylish newly opened cafés, Fika sits lazily at one end of Hauz Khas Village. Since it’s part of Minimalist Poshtel, it’s popular among travellers. Cafe Fika introduces the concept of ‘a moment to slow down and appreciate the good things in life’—coffee with friends.

9. Lake View Bistro

The restaurant is exactly what its name, “Bistro,” suggests. It’s a decent small place with an unpretentious yet sophisticated atmosphere, ideal for both romantic and family dinners. In my view, sunset is the best time to be here. From the gallery space, you may enjoy your meal with a view of the greenery, lake, and sunset. Though it’s just about 5 years old, it has received a lot of attention among the visitors.

10. Record Room

Being one of the older cafes in Hauz Khas Village, Record Room quite popular among party lovers. Because with a lakeside view, it offers cozy indoor seating with an energetic atmosphere. Besides, the outdoor lake-view balcony seating arrangement is also attractive, making it perfect for both casual dinners and nightlife. However, I felt that the space is inadequate, which is one of the limitations of the restaurant.

As the name suggests, the restaurant has created the same free-spirited vibe as a ‘Gypsy’. It’s a small place with a balcony facing Hauz Khas Lake. It has a cozy ambiance with large mural paintings on the walls, a few books placed around, and no traditional tables or chairs. Instead, there is a setup with low Japanese-style tables and cushions attached along the wall. Moreover, the informal, casual environment with live music encourages visitors to join in and play musical instruments along with the singer.

  • Food types: Italian and Asian; Most popular food: Chicken & Jalapeno pizza, Pita Hummus (Veg/Chicken), Chicken Schnitzel, Kebabs, Grilled Mustard Chicken Sandwich, Mac & Cheese Pasta, Avocado Shake, Caramel Cold Coffee

One of the earlier cafes in Hauz Khas Village, this resto-bar started around 2015. It features a slightly traditional setup while still matching the lively and upbeat vibe of a bar. With two seating options—indoor seating and an open-feel window seating area, it’s well suited for millennials, families, and groups of friends.

New ones trying to make a name!

Very recently, a few new vibrant, and theme based cafes have come up in Hauz Khas Village. While they look interesting, they are yet to prove their worth. So, I will take some time before recommending them.

  • The Shellbeacon Café Kitchen & Bar: Styled as a fine-dining space with classic interiors, the resto-bar seems elegant and refined one. It organizes a variety of events such as pottery-making, painting, and other creative workshops.
  • The Village Rooftop Café: The café is well-designed and spacious, providing a comfortable dining experience. It offers a wide range of cuisines, including Continental, Lebanese, Napoletana, Indian coastal, and Italian.

  • Byterra, A Conscious Café: As the name suggests, this café is built around the concept of conscious and mindful living in everyday moments. Promoted by The Tea Room, it follows a plant-forward and health-conscious approach.
  • Conscious Coffee Craving: This decently designed open-air rooftop café attracts visitors by hosting various events such as chess club meet-ups and art workshops, including canvas painting, pottery, oil pastel painting, charcoal painting, and texture painting.

Small Eateries/ Street Food Experience

Apart from the above mentioned cafes/ resto-bars, Hauz Khas Village has a number of small cafes/ eateries with limited seating capacity, but relatively good on food-quotient.

  • WOW Momo: A prominent fast-food brand located in the middle of the market, primarily serves several types of momos and cold beverages.
  • Oval Bean Café: In front of Wow Momo, it serves types of burgers, fries, sandwiches, parathas, pasta, and wraps, along with a range of coffee, tea, shakes, and more.
  • Chicago Pizza: Adjacent to Oval Bean Cafe, this cafe offers various types of pizzas and beverages.
  • Mr. K Korean Ramyun Cafe: Beside Chicago Pizza, this café is said to be Delhi’s first (not sure) Korean café. If you are fond of Korean cuisine, this place is definitely worth a visit.

  • The Burg Room: A few steps ahead of Hauz Khas Social, in the same lane as Gypsy Cafe, the Burg Room is a little corner of western snacks.
  • Drizzle & Dip: In the Lake View Bistro lane, this is a nice pastry and dessert shop.
  • Welcome Point: Near the gate of Hauz Khas Monument, this ‘value-for-money’ eatery serves all types of North Indian cuisine, momos, Chinese snacks, pasta, and Kolkata Kathi rolls.
  • Small eateries behind Hanuman Temple: Behind the Hanuman Temple in the village, there are a few nice small eateries. Prominent among them is Authentic Momo & Laphing, offering authentic Tibetan food.

Concluding Remark

While I rated above the cafes and restro-bars in Hauz Khas Village from a neutral’s perspective, I feel like sharing my/ our favorites.

  • For light snacks/ brunch, we love: The Tea Room; Cafe Fika.
  • When in a mood for some comfort food, we choose: Naivedyam; Coast Cafe; Lama Kitchen.
  • For North Indian food, Hauz Khas Social is our go-to place.
  • And sometimes, when we feel like having food with a view, we head to Mia Bella.

Even though Hauz Khas Village doesn’t many fine dine restaurants, the cafes are pretty good and have options for everyone. So, if you are visiting the village, do choose a good cafe to sit and enjoy some good food. However, if party and nightlife are top of your mind, I’m gonna write a separate article on it soon.
